Raja Rani is a Tamil film directed by Atlee Kumar, starring Karthi and Kajal Aggarwal in the lead roles. The film's soundtrack and background score were composed by A. R. Rahman while the cinematography was handled by Tirru, who also worked on Atlee Kumar's Kalavani (2012). The film released on 29 September 2013 to positive reviews from critics. The film was remade in Telugu as "Nuvvu Nenu Rakshasi" (2014). The story revolves around an orphan girl who was brought up by her mother's sister. A small village named Kavinadi is also the place where the movie takes place, with Raja Rani (Karthi) as its main protagonist. A couple of years back, the village was hit by a drought and there were no rains for six months which made most of the people leave their houses and eventually forcing them to migrate to other places leaving only a few families like Bharat (Goundamani), Jagannatha (Chetan), Saraswathi (Jyothika) and others. Raja Rani's life is a typical happy-go-lucky village lad who loves his family, friends and the place. The story takes a turn when Raja Rani walks out of his house and gets lost in the streets of Chennai, where he sees a young girl (Kajal Agarwal) who is struggling to make ends meet for herself and her father, who suffers from cancer. He follows her home one day and meets Nandhini (Kajal Agarwal). They both instantly fall in love and start dating each other without knowing the truth about each other's families. Time passes and Raja Rani's love for Nandhini grows stronger as time passes by. After a few incidents, Raja Rani's mother gets to know about him being in love with Nandhini, who is actually her sister's daughter. She gets very angry at her son for this act of his and refuses to accept the relationship. Raja Rani tries hard to convince his mother but it is all in vain. He then decides to marry Nandhini without the knowledge of anyone else. Just then, Bharat (Goundamani), Jagannatha (Chetan) and others come back after hearing about Raja Rani doing so. They try their best to cancel this marriage but Nandhini's dad agrees on marrying them without any hesitation. Both Raja and Nandhini get married and live happily together."Raja Rani" was released on 29 September 2013. The film was well received by critics and audience alike, with major praise for the performances of Kajal Aggarwal and Karthi, as well as Atlee Kumar's direction.
