The movie starts seven years after Hrithik Roshan's superhit movie Kites (2010). Jogi Lal Yadav (Anupam Kher) has two sons, Suraj Yadav (Shreyas Talpade), the elder, and Jai Yadav (Shahrukh Khan). Suraj works as a reporter for the Indian version of WikiLeaks. He is on the verge of exposing some big secrets on his show called "Wish Wash" when his boss orders him to drop the story. The events drag him into a web of conspiracy. His father Jogi Lal Yadav is killed by Saawariyaa (Kareena Kapoor), who is a vision and follower of Shiva One (Arjun Rampal). The group successfully kills Suraj’s brother Jai, which is a major loss for the Yadav family. A new day dawns for the Yadav family as Suraj moves on to his new life. Seven years later, Suraj has become a journalist who works with a news channel, "Investi". He has become a bitter person and emotionally detached from his family. His father's men kidnap him and Kadar Hassan (Mukesh Tiwari) holds him hostage in an abandoned building for seven years. Meanwhile, Saawariyaa has started to have some doubts about her beliefs after she sees developments in the world around them and the speed at which technology grows.
